Inflate a balloon the science way

Updated: Mar 9, 2022

Hi BoxLabbers! Thought we would give you a quick yet fun experiment to do whilst your at home. This is really simple and you can use items around the house for this! (Just ask a parent or guardian if you are not sure).

The Experiment

1. Inside a small-medium size balloon; pour one teaspoon baking soda. Try using a funnel to pour it into the balloon.

2. Put 12 teaspoons (56g) of vinegar into a test tube/beaker/conical flask (whatever you have available). Use a funnel to pour it or a syringe/pipette.

3. Stretch the opening of the balloon around the opening, being careful not to let the baking soda inside the balloon mix into the test tube/beaker/conical flask.

4. Whilst lifting the balloon up, straighten the balloon so the baking soda drops inside the test tube.

5. When the two substances mix, they produce oxygen and the balloon will inflate.

The Review

I want to do more reviews of free science experiments for you guys to do at home. Let us know how you get on. We will post a video of us doing it. Lets see yours. #boxlab Really easy reaction! Thanks to Sciencing
