Separating Mixtures

Hi BoxLabbers! Here's another quick yet fun experiment to do whilst your at home. This is really simple and you can use items around the house for this! (Just ask a parent or guardian if you are not sure).

The Experiment

Mix Salt and Pepper seasoning together. Using static electricity, you can quickly separate the seasonings to create a pile of each. We can demonstrate the principles of static electricity, this trick separates the seasonings easily.

Create an electrical charge to collect the lighter seasoning.

  1. Mix some salt and pepper together on a plate.

  2. Rub a plastic comb against your clothing or rub it with an inflated balloon, if available. The rubbing creates an electric charge.

  3. Hold the comb 1 inch above the mixture of pepper and salt, until the pepper clings to it. Don't lower the comb too much. Brush or knock the pepper off the comb into its own pile.

  4. Repeat as necessary to remove the rest of the pepper from the mixed pile!

  5. Try some other house seasonings in the mixture to see how ingredients are charged differently.

Heres a video of me trying out too!
